Some people who\u2019ve had\u00a0kidney stones<\/a>\u00a0say they\u2019re more painful than having a baby. Doctors say if you don\u2019t take the right precautions in the Texas heat, your chances go up of getting one.<\/p>\n

A few months ago David Bauman, 46, says he experienced the worst pain of his life<\/p>\n

\ufffdIt was just so intense it caused me to vomit,\ufffd Bauman said.<\/p>\n

Bauman was feeling a\u00a0kidney stone<\/a>\u00a0trying to make its way out of his system.<\/p>\n

\ufffdIt was almost like someone was sticking a knife in your back and going up and down,\ufffd he said.<\/p>\n

As part of natural metabolism, the body creates and filters crystals from the kidneys.<\/p>\n

\ufffdIf we don\u2019t have enough urine to wash those crystals out they can start bumping into each other and forming stones,\ufffd urologist Dr. Richard Chopp
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

Doctors say the Texas heat and a lack of hydration puts Austinites at greater risk of\u00a0kidney stones<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufffdThe major cause in Austin is a fluid problem,\ufffd Chopp said.<\/p>\n

To decrease your chances of having a\u00a0kidney stone<\/a>, Chopp says, avoid salt and drink a lot of water and lemonade.<\/p>\n

\ufffdWhen citrate is excreted in the urine it acts as an inhibitor for those crystals to stick together,\ufffd Chopp said.<\/p>\n

Since Bauman had a\u00a0kidney stone<\/a>, his chances of getting another one increased. So he\u2019s drinking lots of water.<\/p>\n

\ufffdProbably eight to 10 glasses a day if not more,\ufffd Bauman said.<\/p>\n

Doctors say a family history of\u00a0kidney stones<\/a>\u00a0also puts you at greater risk.<\/p>\n
