There are also many different theories about what causes\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>\u00a0and what can be done to treat it.<\/p>\n<p>This makes things very confusing for parents who are struggling to come to terms with what is best for their child.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diagnosis and symptoms of\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>\u00a0is a neurological disorder and one of five developmental disorders classified under the heading of\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pervasive Developmental Disorders<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDD<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pervasive Developmental Disorders<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDD<\/a>) is made up of 5 different disorders:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Asperger\u2019s Syndrome<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Childhood Disintegrative Disorder<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDD<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Rett\u2019s Disorder<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDD<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Not Otherwise Specified (<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDD<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; NOS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is estimated that as many as 1.5 million Americans, including children and adults, may have\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>. There are currently no medical tests which can diagnose\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosis is usually based on careful observation as well as information provided by parents and other caregivers on the child\u2019s behavior, communication, social interaction and developmental levels.<\/p>\n<p>There are also a number of screening tests or questionnaires which can be performed, including the CARS rating (Childhood\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>\u00a0Rating Scale) and CHAT (Checklist for\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>\u00a0in Toddlers). Diagnosis can be made by Pediatricians, Psychiatrists and Clinical Psychologists or by a multi-disciplinary team.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In order to make a formal diagnosis of\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>, the following symptoms must be present (DSM lV-TR)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Impairment in social interaction<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Lack of eye contact, facial expression and social gestures<\/li>\n<li>Failure to develop peer relationships<\/li>\n<li>Does not seek out social interaction<\/li>\n<li>Lack of social or emotional reciprocity<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Impairment in communication skills<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>language delay or absence<\/li>\n<li>inability to initiate and sustain conversation<\/li>\n<li>stereotyped or \u2019strange\u2019 use of language<\/li>\n<li>lack of make believe or social play<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Restricted, stereotyped and repetitive behavior, interests and activities<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>abnormally intense preoccupation with certain activities or areas of interest<\/li>\n<li>inflexible insistence on certain nonfunctional rituals or routines<\/li>\n<li>stereotyped and repetitive movements e.g. hand flapping, preoccupation with parts of objects<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>To make the diagnosis at least 6 of the above must be noted, as well as developmental delays in at least ONE of the following areas:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Delayed or abnormal social interaction<\/li>\n<li>Delay or abnormal use of language in social interaction<\/li>\n<li>Delay or absence in symbolic or imaginative play<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The delays or impairment described above can vary from mild to severe. Remember that many healthy children will display some of the above symptoms. This does not make them\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autistic<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>It is important that the full cluster of symptoms described above be present. Some of these symptoms may be present from early infancy, but usually become more obvious by 2 &#8211; 4 years of age.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What causes\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is no known single cause of\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>. It is known that\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>\u00a0is a neurological disorder and that there may be differences in the shape and the structure of the brain of\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autistic<\/a>\u00a0children as opposed to non-<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autistic<\/a>\u00a0children.<\/p>\n<p>It is thought that, in certain cases, there might be a genetic predisposition to\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>, which may run in families. Whether the predisposition to\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>\u00a0is genetic or not, there may be several \u2018triggers\u2019 which can precipitate the disorder.<\/p>\n<p>These could include problems in\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/yoga-for-pregnancy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pregnancy<\/a>\u00a0and birth, viral infections, exposure to certain environmental chemicals or pollutants, digestive abnormalities or even\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/allergi-clear-allergies-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allergies<\/a>\u00a0to certain foods (e.g. milk and dairy products).<\/p>\n<p>There are also suggestions that\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>\u00a0may be caused by a reaction to childhood\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/immunity-plus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vaccines<\/a>. Obviously more research is needed in this area.<\/p>\n<p>It is important for parents to note that\u00a0<a href=\"\/remedies-treatments\/autism-remedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autism<\/a>\u00a0is not a mental illness and is not caused by bad parenting or problems in the home.
