{"id":20518,"date":"2025-09-17T16:35:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T20:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valuecare.wpgamma.com\/?p=20518"},"modified":"2025-09-17T16:35:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T20:35:00","slug":"antidepressant-prescribing-soars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/valuecare.wpgamma.com\/index.php\/2025\/09\/17\/antidepressant-prescribing-soars\/","title":{"rendered":"Antidepressant Prescribing Soars"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler\">\n<p>More than 31 million prescriptions for drugs such as\u00a0<a href=\"\/recommends\/MindSoothe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Prozac<\/a>\u00a0were issued in 2006 \u2013 a 6% rise on the year before.<\/p>\n<p>The figures come as two studies showed \u201cstartling\u201d benefits of country walks in people with depression.<\/p>\n<p>Mind, the charity that reported the findings, said GPs should consider \u201cecotherapy\u201d as a valid alternative.<\/p>\n<p>The National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence issued guidance in 2004 recommending that\u00a0<a href=\"\/recommends\/MindSoothe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">antidepressants<\/a>\u00a0should not be used as first-line therapy for mild to moderate depression.<\/p>\n<p>Instead patients should be offered guided self-help and psychological therapies in the first instance.<\/p>\n<p>But figures from the Information Centre indicate the number of prescriptions for\u00a0<a href=\"\/recommends\/MindSoothe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">antidepressants<\/a>\u00a0are still on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>In particular prescriptions for a group of drugs known as SSRIs, which include\u00a0<a href=\"\/recommends\/MindSoothe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Prozac<\/a>, rose by 10% last year from 14.7m to 16.2m.<\/p>\n<p>There have been fears that the drugs are linked to suicidal thoughts and self-harm in some cases.<\/p>\n<p>In 2003, experts said SSRI antidepressants should not be given to teenagers after experts\u2019 concerns they made some patients suicidal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 31 million prescriptions for drugs such as\u00a0Prozac\u00a0were issued in 2006 \u2013 a 6% rise on the year before.
