{"id":25647,"date":"2025-09-22T15:13:20","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T19:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valuecare.wpgamma.com\/?p=25647"},"modified":"2025-09-22T15:13:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T19:13:20","slug":"bullying-has-long-term-health-consequences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/valuecare.wpgamma.com\/index.php\/2025\/09\/22\/bullying-has-long-term-health-consequences\/","title":{"rendered":"Bullying Has Long-Term Health Consequences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012)\u00a0<strong>Childhood bullying<\/strong>\u00a0can lead to long term health consequences, including general and\u00a0<a href=\"\/about\/PsychologicalHealth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mental health<\/a>\u00a0issues, behavioral problems,\u00a0<a href=\"\/recommends\/MindSoothe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eating disorders<\/a>, smoking, alcohol use, and homelessness, a study by the Crime Victims\u2019 Institute at Sam Houston State University found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is apparent from these results is that bullying victimization that occurs early in life may have significant and substantial consequences for those victims later in life,\u201d said Leana Bouffard, Director of the Crime Victims\u2019 Institute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThus, the adverse health consequences of victimization are much more far-reaching than just immediate injury or trauma. Understanding these long term consequences is important to assessing the true toll of crime on its victims and on society as well as responding to victims more effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study, \u201cThe Long Term Health Consequences of Bullying Victimization,\u201d recommends investing in victim services and effective prevention programs, such as the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, a school based initiative for violence prevention. Programs can help address the immediate trauma, both mental and physical, that victims experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis type of investment may also have the added benefit of reducing the long-term deleterious effects identified in this and other studies, thus reducing the high cost of victimization born by the victims themselves, the health care system and society in general,\u201d Bouffard said.<\/p>\n<p>The current study is based on the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, a long term study that tracks a sample of U.S. residents born between 1980 and 1984. Nineteen percent of those surveyed said they had been a victim of repeated bullying.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that those\u00a0<em>bullying victims<\/em>\u00a0had more negative perceptions of their general health and\u00a0<a href=\"\/about\/PsychologicalHealth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mental health<\/a>\u00a0and higher rates of emotional\/mental or behavioral problems that interfered with school or work.
