Alzheimer\u2019s is a debilitating and degenerative disease that slowly robs the mind and physical functioning of the sufferer. Not only does the person diagnosed with this condition experience the consequences but so do the friends, family and loved ones.<\/p>\n

In a research study published in 2003 in the Archives of Neurology Texas researchers worked to further research that had previously shown that statin drugs used to treat\u00a0high cholesterol<\/a>\u00a0levels reduce the risk of a diagnosis of\u00a0Alzheimers<\/a>\u00a0disease.<\/p>\n

Little is known or understood about the mechanism of this process, only that in survey results of hospital records those patients who have taken statin medications have a much reduced risk of developing Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

In this study researchers theorized that the byproducts of cholesterol were contributing to the development of\u00a0Alzheimers<\/a>\u00a0disease. In recent blood studies researchers found higher concentrations of these substances in patients with\u00a0Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0that in those without which could be an indication of brain cell death.<\/p>\n

In the study from Texas the researchers examined the efficiency of three statin drugs to lower the blood level of cholesterol byproducts over 6 weeks using 44 patients. The results showed that there was a 21% lowering of the byproducts in the group taking the statin drugs and a 10% lowering in the group taking niacin.<\/p>\n

This is an important contribution to the continued research into the treatment and prevention of this degenerative disease.<\/p>\n

However, scientists and researchers don\u2019t agree on the etiology of the disease. There is significant debate about which comes first amyloid plaques or neurofibrillary tangles. Some believe that\u00a0Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0is genetically based while others believe that the amyloid plaques cause a chronic state of inflammation in the brain. There is also debate that there may be an abnormal blood-brain barrier.<\/p>\n

Researchers also disagree about the implications of cholesterol on the risk of developing Alzheimers disease. There are several studies that implicate\u00a0high cholesterol<\/a>\u00a0levels with increased risk while Henry Lorin in his book\u00a0Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Solved makes a case for\u00a0high cholesterol<\/a>\u00a0providing a protection against the development of the disease.<\/p>\n

In his book Lorin sites 2500 references and bases his beliefs on 10 years of study. He believes that\u00a0Alzheimers<\/a>\u00a0could be caused by long term shortages of cholesterol in the elderly brain which then produces amyloid plaques to make up the difference.<\/p>\n

In either theory, cholesterol too high or too low that increases the risk of developing\u00a0Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>, the suggestions point to maintaining\u00a0cholesterol levels<\/a>\u00a0at near normal levels to decrease risk no matter which theory is correct.<\/p>\n
