Alzheimer\u2019s disease is a disease receiving much attention by the popular media. Indeed, it is a devastating illness that impacts entire families. What we do know is that there are genetic factors and modifiable lifestyle and dietary factors that influence a person\u2019s chance of developing this cognitive disorder.<\/p>\n

A study published in European Journal of Internal Medicine (2004;15:381-386) suggests an infection may also play a role in Alzheimer\u2019s disease. In a small controlled study, chronic infection with the bacteria, Helicobacter pylori was assessed in three groups of subjects:<\/p>\n

1) those with Alzheimer\u2019s disease,<\/p>\n

2) vascular disease or,<\/p>\n

3) matched control.<\/p>\n

All of the subjects had no prior history of peptic ulcer, chronic gastritis or gastric cancer (an important stipulation because these conditions are linked to chronic infection with H. pylori ). By measuring antibodies to H<\/p>\n
