Twenty years ago, about 10% of the population experienced seasonal allergies; today the numbers have doubled to more around 20% to 25%. One in ten people suffer from some form of allergy.

Allergies can lead to other chronic conditions such as asthma and they should not be trivialized or ignored by any means.

“It’s a lot easier to treat the allergic reactions before they start happening than to wait until you’ve had symptoms,” according to Andrew Singer, M.D., an allergist at the University of Michigan Health System. “Typically, this means starting a couple weeks before allergy season even begins to get your body ready for the onslaught of allergens. Once the allergic reaction happens, it takes more medication and it’s much more difficult to calm things down and make you feel better.”

Starting and treating allergies and asthma early means being ready any day now. Depending on what part of the country you live in, allergy season is likely to begin around March or April and continue straight through to early fall. The earliest allergens to pop up are tree pollens, followed by grass pollens and then different types of weed pollens. Ragweed, one of the most common allergens, usually comes in to play around late August or early September.

Allergies and Asthma

Allergies can also be linked to asthma. Among children with allergies, 50% to 70% may have underlying asthma as well. For some people, allergens in the environment specifically trigger their asthma.

“Certainly when asthma’s involved, allergies become a little bit more dangerous because the asthma can get to the point where a child or adult can have difficulty breathing, may need supplemental oxygen, or may need to be seen in the emergency room for further treatment,” Singer says.

Allergic asthma is characterized by symptoms that are triggered by an allergic reaction. Allergic asthma is the most common form of asthma, affecting over 50% of the 20 million asthma sufferers. Symptoms of allergic asthma can include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath or rapid breathing, and chest tightness. However, allergic asthma is triggered by inhaled allergens such as dust mite allergen, pet dander, pollen and mold resulting in asthma symptoms.

Allergic rhinitis, or hayfever, is triggered by “allergens,” substances that initiate an allergic response, such as pollens or molds, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). Grass, weeds and pollen trigger hay fever and allergies.

Many trees, grasses and weeds have small, light and dry pollens that are easily carried by the wind. Some of the major outdoor allergens that cause allergic reactions during this time of year are trees such as oak, elm, birch, ash, hickory, poplar, sycamore, maple, cypress, walnut, and western red cedar; and grasses such as timothy, Bermuda, orchard, red top, and sweet vernal. In late summer and fall weeds such as ragweed, sagebrush, pigweed, Russian thistle and cocklebur, become problematic for allergy sufferers.

For natural asthma relief, Native Remedies BioVent assists with the management of chronic asthma and the control and prevention of asthma attacks.

Allergies and Sinusitis

Hay fever and other allergic reactions can be contributing factors to sinusitis. Allergies can trigger swelling in the sinus and nasal mucous linings. The swelling can cause sinus passages to close up, trapping bacteria in the upper respiratory tract. Bacteria in the sinuses can develop into a sinus infection.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the hollow cavities around the eyes and nose known as the nasal sinuses. While allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose, sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses.

Allergy and Sinusitis Symptoms

Frequent allergic reactions, resulting in sinusitis, can cause sinusitis to become a chronic condition. Chronic sinusitis sufferers have frequent and ongoing inflammation of the sinus membranes. While allergies can’t be cured, there are things you can do to limit or lessen your exposure:

* Keep windows closed at night to prevent pollens or molds from drifting into the home.
* Use an air conditioner and dehumidifier to keep air clean, cool, and dry in your house.
* Keep car windows closed when traveling.
* Minimize outdoor activity on days when the pollen count or humidity is reported to be high or on windy days when mold and pollen are blown about. Avoid going outdoors during peak times of year for pollen exposure.
* Take vacations to a more pollen-free area, such as the beach or sea.
* Wear a mask when doing lawn or garden work, such mowing or raking, which stirs up pollens and molds.
* Avoid hanging sheets or clothing out to dry, pollen and molds collect on them.
* Vacuum your carpets, curtains and soft furniture often.
* Take medications as prescribed in the recommended dosage. Do not take more medication to alleviate severe symptoms.
* Take a shower after spending time outdoors to remove pollen and mold that may be on your skin and hair. Also, shower or bathe at night to remove pollens or other allergen from your hair and skin.
* Remove any mold you find in your home.

“It’s impossible to completely eliminate all the things that might trigger your allergies, but taking steps to delay your exposure to certain allergens may help,” said Jonathan Bernstein, MD, AAAAI fellow and member of the Indoor Allergen Committee.

If you lead the fast paced life, eat fast food, get insufficient rest and take unnatural chemicals including chemical drugs both prescription and OTC – for headaches, backaches, etc., you can exacerbate your allergies.

In 99 out of 100 adults the body is depleted of chemicals. These chemicals are nothing more than the minerals your body needs to function properly. In this day and age it is an absolute necessity to put those minerals into your body by supplementing. Foods do not contain enough to give you the proper balance, even if you eat 100% organic. When your minerals (chemical) balance is where it should be your system will tend to give you less or no problems as with allergies, asthma and other illnesses and for those few who that simple step doesn’t solve the problem, it will require rebuilding the immune balance.
